A safe, accessible storage area is a valuable resource for an early childhood classroom. Preschool aged students learn through play and exploration. My classroom is a very small portable with little to no built in storage. I simply do not have any room to store much in an organized manner. Adequate storage would enable me to rotate materials based on the developmental needs and interests of my students.
It is important that materials are organized so children can find what they need when they need it. This helps my students know “I can do things on my own.” Organized items empower them to try out new ideas and use new materials.
With my current limited storage, it is difficult to get to materials/supplies and is a potential safety hazard for my students. A storage shed will make it possible to safely store collections of materials, manipulatives, and props around specific studies/units. This will allow me to build the collections into the curriculum at appropriate times during the school year and then kept away safely when not in use. Giving the students more engaging materials will increase student learning and overall success. A storage shed will save a tremendous amount of classroom space, allow the appropriate amount of room to move around and explore materials safely, and make sure that dangerous or hazardous materials are inaccessible.
