Do you remember middle school? Our school day starts at 8:15 and students are in classes until 3:15. Lunch lasts for 24 minutes, P.E. is only four days a week, and there is no recess. That is a lot of sitting, a lot of time for anybody to be expected to be on task. These students spend 25% of their day in math class, every day. A certain level of physical stimulation can improve mental performance. Students perform best when they are neither under-stimulated (bored, disinterested) or over-stimulated (restless or frustrated). Any sort of fidgeting both stimulates energy levels and releases excess energy; bouncing or stretching using a Bouncyband achieves this goal while leaving hands free to work. A 2017 study conducted by Clemson University concluded that students using Bouncyband tension bands stay on task for 10% longer than students without. If this project is funded, every student in my class will have a desk equipped with a Bouncyband. Teenagers are going to fidget. They are at an age where they are bursting with energy (when they're not sleeping in class). Giving them a quiet, unobtrusive way to be more comfortable in the classroom while helping them stay focused will help improve the quality of everyone's day--theirs and mine!
