Of the 500+ kindergarten, 1st-, and 2nd-graders at my school, only about a handful of them have ever held a paintbrush. The most exposure they've had in art has been limited to coloring with crayons. Yet, although crayon-coloring seems meager when considering the world of possibilities in art-production, my students' eyes still light up when given the chance to release themselves into anything involving an array of color, the use of their hands, and an unrestricted mind. My students live in the Mississippi Delta, one of the most impoverished regions in the United States. Most of their families cannot afford basic school supplies, let alone art supplies, and have rarely ever received guidance in artistic or creative expression. Yet every single one of my kindergarten, 1st-, and 2nd-graders straightens their attention and lets out a sigh of yearning when shown an activity involving the use of paint.
