I am a Gr. 3-5 AIS Reading teacher who teaches in a high poverty school in a very poor community. My building is often frowned upon when people are told their children need to attend their neighborhood school. We are at 90%+ poverty level. Our children score very low when it comes to State Tests, but our school is showing improvement. We lack parental support with academics and anything else we do to try to engage families with their child's learning. The students I service are in a replacement core reading program. They are chosen because they are the lowest performers at their grade level. These students are also the children who suffer from ADD/ADHD or have 504 Plans. They cannot focus or sit for a long period of time.
