I teach 9th and 10th grade students that have never passed a state-administered, standardized math exam, and very few of them even passed mathematics courses during middle school and early high school. They are hand selected to work with me and my co-teachers since we know how to build their confidence and prowess with the mathematics. We use a lot of resource and online materials already in order to engage them in using what they learn without even realizing it. Then, once they see their progress, the students become much more successful in their high school careers, realizing that mathematics is not as intimidating as it seems. Each year, fewer students come to us with the advanced technology that we know is available to them for the tests, and we want to build a classroom set of the TI-84s so our students can master them before they are forced to use the online version at the end-of-course tests.
