My students all want to do well, but they have various disabilities. For so long they have failed, but instead of giving up, they get excited at the smallest of success. They all have dreams of a career and even with all the labels that they have been given, I try to instill in their minds each day that it does not define them. Just today, a teacher told her class that when they "hit the hall way", they need to be quiet. Suddenly one of my students with autism responds, "they didn't hit the hallway." I responded by telling him that they don't literally mean to hit the hallway. He stated, "I take everything literally." This response put a smile to my face because it is very important for a person with disability to have is an understanding their disability. My student obviously understood some characteristics of autism.
