In pursuing a minor in art history and a supplemental credential in art, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to dabble in art classes. I'm not talented - no Ninja Turtle master by far! - but my experiences led me to appreciate the feeling of using quality art supplies. No offense to the "get you through class on a modest budget" supplies we all use, but having paper specifically intended for watercolor use or drawing pens that don't bleed is a luxury the majority of our students don't experience. Many of our students turn to the arts as a refuge, and providing these opportunities allows them to demonstrate their awe-inspiring skills. Part of my role as a teacher is to open the door to visions of potential future possibilities. Giving students the tools to develop their talents can encourage a future in art, graphic design, literary pursuits, advertising, advocacy... how they choose to apply their abilities is one of the greatest surprises.
