Most of my students come from low income, Hispanic, Native American, African Immigrants, Middle Eastern Immigrants, and white families. My students are energetic and want to learn, but without having the proper guidance, they resort to activities which are non-productive or worse yet, counter productive. Some follow the philosophy that since their parent(s) didn't finish school, why should they!?! Close to 80% or more are farm families. We are a "high tech" school, but most times we continue to teach from paper and pencil methods; from what is comfortable. Many of the students use the technology to watch music videos or play video games. I have told them, instead of just watching, why not become a programmer or designer, but they do not understand the correlation between STEM classes and getting into the professions, which would take them to their dreams and further. I try to encourage them daily to seek uses for mathematics, but students need the tactile stimulation!
