Allowing students opportunities to choose their own seating strengthens their decision making skills by holding them accountable for their own learning. Flexible seating options have proven to enhance student focus, improve participation and behavior, and achieve higher academic success. Studies also suggest that students who are not confined by strict seating arrangements learn at a more rapid rate. Alternative seating will provide places to work collaboratively and individually, in a comfortable classroom environment increasing student engagement and opening the room to a variety of learning styles. Options like a comfy futon, bouncy yoga balls, portable lap desks, bean bag chairs, and floor cushions will help make this possible for my students.
