We have new reading and writing workshop lessons from Portland, Oregon, and there are suggested mentor texts. These excellent lessons are research-based and engaging. Having the right mentor texts will allow me to teach more effectively and help my students to grow into independent, successful, life-long readers and writers! During our workshop time, I read aloud to my students from a mentor text. I model the strategy and use think-aloud to explicitly show how the strategy is used. I ask questions to help the students to connect the book to the strategy. The students turn and talk and share their thinking with a partner; from their sharing, I can check their levels of understanding. These lessons are very effective, because students have opportunities to work independently, with my support, and then to come back and share their successes.
