I teach at a Title 1 school, where many of my families do not own a computer. In our technology driven society, it is vital that kids be exposed to computers and tablets from an early age. My first grade students love to use the one iPad I have for research, educational apps, computer programs and to complete Accelerated Reader quizzes. If my classroom had more computers/tablets, I could move my kids along a lot farther by the end of the year. Last year, all of my students were able to move from Kindergarten level reading to at least beginning of the year second grade reading. Many of my kids progressed two years or more. The kids at George E. Harris are so excited about reading that our school won a contest during Nevada Reading Week, where we beat out every other Elementary School in Clark County by reading the most books that week. For our efforts we won a free concert given by MKTO! Imagine what these students could do with more technology!
