The course I teach is a pre-engineering course called Design and Modeling. The purpose of this course is to provide students with an opportunity to act like real engineers. Over the course of the semester, students will design a brace and rehabilitation toy for Cerebral Palsy patients. Through the national curriculum designed by Project Lead the Way (PLTW), they will learn how to prepare and annotate an engineering notebook and how to implement a 6 step design process. In order to reproduce their prototype leg braces, the students will learn how to measure to the thousandths of an inch by using a dial caliber. The calibers will also be useful to replicate the a rehabilitation toy in a 3D computer program. Their toys which will be made out of linking cubes will allow them to configure their toy to meet the needs of the Cerebral Palsy patients. Linking cubes are also a great way for students to conceptualize volume and surface area. Through their experiences with a dial calibers and linking cubes, they are bound to become better problem solvers in our world. Let’s make our students great again by supporting my class.
