I teach in an urban school district where 80% of the students' families are on free or reduced-price lunch/breakfast. Over 75% of students live in poverty and single-parent homes. English is a second language to many families. We have a high population of families who speak another language, for example Spanish and Turkish. Close to half of my students are English Language Learners (ELL) and struggle with the basic letter sounds in the early stages of reading. My students don't have access to many of these programs at home because they have limited funds for computers and other electronics. These programs are especially helpful for students learning English as a second language because they can listen to model reading and the visual cues guide them.
