These materials will allow students to interact with current, relevant news stories daily. So much of what they consider "news" is what they get from social media. I would like to provide an opportunity for them to engage in and discuss these articles in an academic setting. Having access to texts such as these allows students to voice their opinions in an educated manner. My project goal is to incorporate more reading and discussion into the AVID curriculum to send these students out into the world as informed citizens who can carry articulate conversations. Along with the reading component, there will also be opportunities for students to further research topics that they find interesting, which makes reading more personal. Overall, this non-fiction reading project will help students improve their literacy, which in turn will make them better students in all subject areas.
