The description above conveys the lifestyle of most of my high school students. I teach vocal music. I try to add culture to the lives of my students. I take them to operas and musicals. They learn to swing dance and to sing art songs. I believe that music can make a difference in the lives of my students. I have seen it many times in my 36 years of teaching. Choir gives students a reason to attend school. Singing builds confidence and positive self-esteem that carries over to higher grades, happier people, and more assurance, in all areas of life. Yes, I teach music, but I also teach life. I buy clothes for my students. I buy costumes for our shows with my own money. I drive students home after concerts. By singing in choir, performing solos, going to contest, being on stage, etc. the confidence slowly begins to rise. I have seen it many times: the girl who lives in the shelter, the girl whose mother gets drunk every night, the boy whose dad is in prison. These are my students.
