The Pura Belpre Award is given by the American Library Association to Latino/a authors and illustrators who celebrate the Latino cultural experience in America. Children, especially children from immigrant families, need to see successful role models to believe that they too can be successful. Through reading books by Latino/a authors, my students will learn that anyone, no matter their cultural heritage, can write and illustrate a book. Reading these award winning books will also give my students an opportunity to see themselves reflected in the characters. Seeing characters who are from your heritage, helps children build a positive self-identify and feel pride in who they are.
