I teach fifth grade in an urban district in Indianapolis. My school is a high achieving building compared to other schools within my district and compared to other schools in similar districts around Indianapolis. My students are children on the verge of being pre-teens. When they enter our classroom, they enter a safe space for them to be themselves as individuals, to encourage and respect their classmates even if they're not best friends, and especially to take academic risks without the threat of being bullied for being "nerdy." Further, my school is a fabulous foundation for which children can come and learn what school should be like -- an institution with high expectations, welcoming teachers and classmates, and visionary leadership. The teachers at this building are not drill sergeants and they're not summer camp counselors. We teach with one thought in mind -- every child can learn and every child can grow to be better today than he or she was yesterday.
