Our students need tables so they can work collaboratively on projects and build teams more easily. We have small classrooms and every inch counts. We recently got told that we would have 26 students each instead of the normal 24! By having tables, the students can collaborate easier and the footprint is less than with desks. Tables will also allow more freedom of movement as they work on posters together and other projects. By having tables in both the English and the Spanish classroom, the students will feel more congruency between the two classrooms and lose less time getting to work, rather than adjusting to a new system in the other classroom. Our current desks are very old and some have dents and holes that affect written work. They are also not all the same type, so despite trying to make them even like tables, they are not uniform. Our district told us they don't have the money for new furniture. Having tables helps us create more project-based assessments so students work together to create a project from what we learned about reindeer, that special basal story, or geometry! We want to create learners that know how to problem-solve and use each other's strengths to create something worthwhile! They need space to do this.
