I want to use the power of language and words to help my students realize their greatest potential. Many of my students already have loads of unfairness to deal with in life. The writer's notebooks will hopefully give students a place to connect with literature, reflect on their own lives, and even produce some original pieces. The biggest reason for this notebook project, however, is giving a sense of ownership and identity to a group of kids who have been historically disenfranchised in hopes that they will see their own potential. Most of the time it's me telling them how amazing and talented they are - now I want them to see it for themselves. Many of my students are English Language Learners as well, so genuine, authentic writing (and discussion, of course) is the best thing I can give them to help them practice the English language so that they can be successful, contributing, powerful members of our society. These notebooks will help my kiddos learn how to wield the power of words.
