My classroom is made up of students from all walks of life-- some have families that speak languages other than English, many are from other states besides GA, some travel across the country and or world to see family in the summers, and other students have never been outside the state of GA. With all of this diversity, I encourage my students to share their backgrounds and experiences through reading and writing. I encourage my students to play with words as they experiment with grammar and usage, word choice and meaning. I am a word geek, and I try to foster this "nerdist" element in my classroom with every student. Not all of my students love to read or write, so getting them to take risks and maybe, just maybe, fall in love with a book or write a clear cohesive essay is hugely satisfying when it happens.
