Our school's ESL population grows every year. I see my kindergarten students come in lacking basic skills such as communicating their needs, writing their name, singing the alphabet and counting to 10. They DO come in with great enthusiasm and eagerness to learn. Many of the parents do not speak, read or write in English. Parents tell me that they want to help at home but they lack the skills to do so. I want to teach the students how to use programs/games on the tablets to help them learn. Research shows that combining graphics, audio and video can be of tremendous support to ESL students. Then I want the students to teach their families how to use the programs/games at home. I believe that the home/school connection is a vital tool in helping our students reach grade level benchmarks.
