I am writing a project for supplies and rats to keep as "therapy rats" in my office next year. At our school, as at all schools, we have a growing number of students who struggle for one reason or another to manage their emotions in classroom situations. From my own experience, I have found that having jobs and responsibilities for these students as well as the intangible reward of animal friendship can really help to calm down a student and give him/her a sense of belonging in the school community which can then pay off with improved classroom behavior and greater attentiveness to instruction. At other schools in our family of schools, rats are being used for this purpose, and I've heard of the success from both parents and colleagues. For that reason, please consider funding my project to bring the joy and responsibility of animal care to my students.
