We encourage them to participate in activities as grade level Georgia Performance Standards (Language Arts Math Science and Social Studies) are covered in rhyme and song. There’s more than meets the eye when it comes to my brilliant but always puzzling 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students. They have been diagnosed with Low Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder, and are serviced in a self-contained classroom that implements specialized instruction to meet the individual needs of each student. Students diagnosed with Autism view the world very differently than average students. Students in my class are often overwhelmed by everyday sights and sounds. They seldom make eye contact and find it uncomfortable to share common interactions with others. When nervous or frustrated they retreat by hyper-focusing on an object, while blocking out everything else around them. My school facilitates standards driven learning opportunities, where the special needs population is valued as part of the learning community.
