74% of the students at my school are on free and reduced lunch and the number grows each year. They are predominately working class families where both parents work, or they are from single family homes. We also have a large Spanish speaking population and migrant working families. I have approximately 7 students each year that also receive weekend food packs from a local charity. They are sweet children who are eager to learn and thirsty for knowledge, yet many of them have never been outside their own neighborhood. They come to school without a lot of experiences. Many students struggle in reading comprehension due to their disadvantages at home. Our school is small compared to many other elementary schools in Florida with 465 students. This makes our school a real family. Everyone knows everyone and we love it that way!
