These novels will be used in thematic units designed to lead ninth and tenth grade English students in the study of equity and disparity in America. Our school is still using the same textbooks and novels that were being assigned when I was a student in the seats that my students now occupy. I want to foster an environment in which students of color, students with disabilities, students members of the LGBTQI community, and all those who do not feel respectfully represented by do not feel alienated by the perspectives in every single text they are exposed to. This is a small step, but one that is vital for our students and educators to facilitate conversations about race and equity in the classroom to build the stamina necessary to tackle the very real issues our world faces.
