We are a small, rural K-6 Charter school with 126 students. We educate children from primarily middle to low income families. Our free and reduced price lunch population is 56%. In assessing my students I have discovered that over 50% of my students know less than 50% of the upper and lower case alphabet letters. The percentage of students demonstrating letter/sound association is far less than 50%. I have students who have no preschool experience, and 1/4 of the class has an Individual Special Education Plan. I do not have a Para in my classroom to assist individual struggling students.
