Our arts magnet high school provides students all over our district with delightful opportunities to study their regular core content through an arts lens. This outstanding school also offers an abundant variety of arts elective classes including the class I am so privileged to teach entitled Poetry: Production and Performance. Students who choose to take this poetry class are truly beautiful individuals. As Elizabeth Kübler-Ross so eloquently identifies, “The most beautiful people we have known are the ones who have known defeat, known suffering, known struggle, known loss, and have found their way out of the depths. These people have an appreciation, a sensitivity, and an understanding of life that fills them with compassion, gentleness, and a deep loving concern. Beautiful people do not just happen.” By examining their vulnerable selves on the page, the students in this poetry class evolve as writers, performers, and people. They find purpose in their pain.
