If I had to choose one word to best describe the work in my classroom it would be community. Students need a safe place where they can take risks, make mistakes, and learn how to work with others in a flexible, but structured environment that has high, attainable expectations. Consistency is the key to guiding teacher dependent learners forward. I teach in a school that is located in an upper/middle class neighborhood combined with 42% low income families. My classroom is a very diverse collective including special needs, socio-economic needs, and emotional needs. This is a highly active bunch of kiddos and they need space to spread out during independent work time, small group instruction and whole group lessons. There are a few traditions we hold dear no matter what; read aloud, find a work space that is just right for you and math partner work. We LOVE to work around the room and then come back together.
