As a language arts teacher, I want to help my students to become better readers, writers, speakers, viewers, and listeners of texts. By "better" I mean more creative, critical, analytical, and strategic. By "texts" I mean novels, short stories, poems, nonfiction, websites, PowerPoint slides, paintings, photographs, cartoons, graphic novels, tests, plays, speeches, class discussions, movies, and songs. I also want to inspire my students to become more inquisitive, creative, honest, collaborative, tolerant, and respectful of others. I want them to view our class as a community of learners who all have something to contribute. I want them to be comfortable with taking risks and considering alternate viewpoints. And I want them to view me as a valuable resource in this classroom.
