This was the first year offering African American Literature as a class at my school. Teaching in a predominantly White school, this was no small feat. I am trying to expose more students to the literary contributions of African Americans to American literature. This project will make a difference to my students by introducing them to African American fiction and nonfiction. This will broaden their knowledge-base and better prepare them for a multicultural society. Having a plethora of books from which to choose will open a window to African American culture. It will also help African American students see themselves in literature, hopefully inspiring them to read more.
