This project will ensure that our students end the year happy, productive, and engaged. First, this project will meet the basic nutritional needs of our students. Our students do not always eat breakfast in the morning or are hungry (due to the five hours they must wait between breakfast and lunch), and the snacks will ensure they are fulfilled and ready to learn. Secondly, this project will allow our third graders to delve deep into literature through an extraordinary book that teaches courage, perseverance, and friendship. This project will provide a class set of books and an audiobook of the novel for the students to experience. The story The One and Only Ivan is a passionate and enthralling story I am so eager to introduce to our students as their first novel study. Lastly, the Chess and Scrabble boards will be used with students from multiple grade levels to enhance problem-solving skills. With the increasing pressure of standardized testing, the opportunity for critical thinking can at times be narrowed, but we aim to increase opportunities for our students to be challenged and increase stamina, perseverance, and critical planning skills that both chess and scrabble provide.
