Students with severe communication needs often have difficulty not just communicating inside the classroom, but also during non-instructional blocks such as recess and lunch. During these times, students struggle to socialize with peers who do not use the same method of communication. A smartphone with communication apps installed will bridge the gap between disabled and non disabled peers by providing a means to interact and build relationships. Studies have consistently shown improved outcomes for students with severe communication deficits who are able to socialize in age appropriate peers activities. Within our classroom there are several nonverbal students on the autism spectrum who could benefit from shared use of this device during non-instructional periods.
