Teaching at a Title I school with a diverse student body where over 83% of the students are on free and reduced lunch has a range of challenges. One of the major challenges that the 9th literature team currently faces is funding 75 novels that we feel would benefit our students in a myriad of ways. Because of the economic background of our students, they are usually not able to buy their own books, so we try to provide the books for them. Our student population is very culturally diverse with over 60% Hispanic. The diversity of our students has inspired us to make sure that our students have culturally relevant reading materials to create interest in reading while also giving the students books that they can relate to.
