Many of my students live in a high poverty area where basics such as access to books, school uniforms and the Internet are luxuries. There is a high instance of students receiving free and reduced-price lunch through the school. In my classroom we only have access to three computers for 20 students. When it is their turn to be on the computers they are immediately engaged in what they are doing. They are automatically drawn to the allure of technology, being that their access to it is so limited. Last year I was able to borrow a few iPads for a few months for my students to use as a center activity in both reading and math. I saw their interest, engagement and achievement spike as a direct result of their practice on the apps on the iPads!
