First grade is a unique year for young learners as it is a crucial year for phonics instruction. Ideally, students spend the first two years of their academic journey learning language sounds through phonemic awareness and how those sounds transfer to printed symbols. However, this new world in which we live in that has been completely turned around by a viral pandemic, has brought about a new idea. This idea is not one that is ideal, but it is the hand we have been dealt. This idea is not one of prevention and it is not one of routine. Rather, it is a new adventure of diagnosing literacy gaps of wide proportion and prescribing the much needed academic antidote in large doses to ensure students survive the incredible reading pandemic. To ensure that my students are enabled to bridge the gaps that this pandemic has created, I am petitioning for resources that capture their hearts to become great readers. Phonemic Awareness skills are alarmingly at a deficit due to lack of academic exposure. Students in first grade this year, have spent their first two years mostly in quarantine. My hope and prayer is to circle back and reintroduce and practice fun and engaging phonemic awareness activities with my students to build a firm foundation for moving forward in phonics instruction. Thank you for considering my class this year! They are our future! It is our responsibility to give them the same academic gifts we once received as well as prepare them for the new demands of an ever changing world.
