Finding a connection to the world around them always gets my students' brains running. That connection allows them to understand why we are learning the material in class, and, even more importantly, to extend their learning far beyond the classroom. We are a small school in an urban, low-income neighborhood, and very often the students have little connection to the news and the world around them, which can make them feel isolated and out of place with the events and subjects we study. Newspapers can feel daunting (especially to the many students who read far below grade level), and as a result, my students frequently miss out on important events across the globe, and even in their own backyards!
