My kids are some of the most eager, inspiring and resilient kids on the planet. Their curiosity and hunger for knowledge keep me smiling every day, despite the real difficulties that we face. The focus on education in my state and city is lacking and insufficient to meet my kids' needs. Many of my students come from low-income and racially/ethnically diverse backgrounds, and though my kids are SO ready to learn, most of them enter my 6th-grade classroom reading at a 4th or 5th grade reading level. Our school prioritizes equity and believes that all students, no matter their background, deserve access to incredible texts and resources... ones that truly inspire original thinking, and ones that they can learn through by seeing themselves reflected in the pages. Currently my classroom library is full of well-loved but outdated titles. With the books I've chosen here, my kids and I will be able to explore our world and our minds in brand new ways, and become better scholars for it.
