Our school is located across the street from my students' public housing projects. In a community suffering from poverty and gun violence, children should not expect to walk to another symptom of this disparity, but rather a beacon of light. This forces us to focus on what is really important and to always act with purpose. In my classroom, this means adding more to the curriculum to help struggling and failing students, as well as giving students exposure to the world they were not afforded access to. For many of these reasons, my students' dispositions toward school can often be demanding and require "kid buy-in" first. If students do not find purpose in their learning, I make it my goal to design lessons so students are always encouraged to think about "why are we learning this?"
