My students are part of a very low socioeconomic group. Hispanics are our largest group. Most do not have internet or computer access. Our school promotes success through the implementation of STEM and PBL (Project Base Learning) opportunities for our students, but unfortunately, we do not have enough technology resources to share among the different departments. Science teachers are forced to do most of the research themselves, or work on weekends to accommodate for our students to use the computer lab and do their work. One challenge that I've encountered with asking students to work on weekends, is that many parents are working all the time, and students have no one to bring them to school so they can do their work. Many are feeling discouraged by not having access to technology when they are away from school. I strive at providing them with the opportunity, but I need to have technology access in my room so I can help them accomplish their learning goals.
