My students love to build, and domino installations and complex marble runs are very popular in the art studio. They love to set up multi-faceted structures and set off chain reactions! Watching kids work through problems collaboratively to construct their creations is always inspiring. The big smiles on their faces and their fascinating conversations prove that learning is exciting and fun.
When kids spend time on work they choose and are intrinsically motivated to do, the level of engagement and authentic learning skyrockets. When kids build, they are literally constructing their own knowledge. They try, and err, and come to understand how the world works through their very important play.
Currently, our kids are using some high quality materials I've gratefully purchased with grant money, but some of my thrift store finds cause fruitless frustration. The budget dominoes I've collected fall over on their own, and the LEGO box is looking sparse. They still use them happily, but I know that higher quality materials would really maximize their learning. I want to provide them with the materials they need to take their important work to the next level.
