My kindergartners come from very low income homes. Many have parents that are not able to spend the time to read to them or have the ability to read themselves. Most of my students have very low vocabularies because they are not read to at home. Also, they do not get the opportunities to leave their neighborhood, therefore reading opens them up to new worlds and experiences that they would not get normally.
