Every year, my students will struggle with participation and they lack the skills needed to hold a professional conversation. They are so fearful of being wrong, that they do not want to discuss what's going on in the classroom. My students are capable of holding conversations, but they need to be stimulated by something new. They need something to talk about, that does’t involve Facebook or hash tags. To accomplish this goal, I’d like to stimulate those engaging conversations with reading more about how math is found in the “real-world”. My students need to see that Math is all around them. They need to read about real-world math that will bring our curriculum to life. To do this, we will need a one year subscription (10 issues) to Scholastic Math magazine. These magazines are filled with thought-provoking nonfiction articles that make a connection between math and extraordinary news stories from around the world.
