Middle school is a tough time for many students when it comes to speaking up, especially about math. Add to that the fact that a large proportion of the students I teach have an identified learning deficiency and you have a recipe for silence. Providing opportunities for engagement that does not rely on strong verbal skills is crucial. Enter the whiteboard! Imagine a classroom where students knew they could share their ideas in a safe and formative manner. Whiteboards help students understand that strong ideas often go though revisions; erasing and rewriting is part of the process. Whiteboards also allow for flexible grouping: students can access and manipulate the content individually, in pairs, or in small groups. When working collaboratively to solve problems or create models, students strengthen their communication and interpersonal skills. Whiteboards also facilitate positive, authentic feedback. Students can compare work in order to identify similarities and offer constructive feedback.
