After a year of hybrid in-person and remote learning, I can tell my students are struggling with how to learn in a classroom again. All schoolwork this year has been on the computer, and while technology has its place in learning, kids definitely have technology fatigue. They are tired of their screens, and if students were even given paper notes or handouts at all, they had a hard time organizing and keeping up with them. This is especially true for my students specifically, many of whom have failed multiple classes this year and desperately need structure to help them get back on track. In talking with my kids, I've found that they genuinely miss some of the old ways we used to do things (i.e.: paper and pencil), so I wanted to find a way to engage them while helping them relearn how to take notes and participate in classroom instruction. Interactive notebooks is a notetaking system where students use foldables, coloring, and drawings to help them internalize the material they are learning. It is structured so that each section and page is labeled, and they can easily find notes they are looking for. But instead of students just copying down notes, they will also use puzzles, manipulatives and images in their notebooks so that classroom instruction is better catered to all learning styles. Even though the notebooks themselves are very structured, students will be able to take ownership of their work by adding their own notes, drawings, and emphasis points. I know our school has done its best to make sure students are where they should be this school year, but there will be gaps, and I want to do everything I can to help them address those gaps to ensure they are successful.
