My kindergarten class adores being read to. Many have not had exposure to a variety of literature prior to going to school. These books will give my students the background knowledge and exposure to vocabulary that will help them become readers and thinkers. These books are a great way to introduce and tie in our weekly lessons. For example, students will be introduced to the five senses using the following texts: "My Five Senses" by Aliki and "Look, Listen, Taste, Touch and Smell" by Nettleton. These texts can tie science and writing together because it can open a discussion on senses/ our experience and writing informational/ narrative pieces about senses. For kindergarten students that may be one to two sentences. The texts: "Spaghetti in a Hotdog Bun" by Dismondy and "Each Kindness" by Woodson, my students will learn about kindess. It will introduce the lesson on the importance of being a good friend, being kind and building a positive character. The text, "The Skin You Live In" by Taylor will introduce diversity and is a great book to use for Black history month. The texts: "Apples for Everyone" by Esbaum and "Ten Red Apples" by Hutchins will be used during Fall and the theme for the week would be apples. We will explore apples using our senses, learn about the apple life cycle, parts of an apple and how it relates to the Fall season. The texts: "Tap the Magic Tree" by Matheson and "A Tree for All Seasons" by Benard will also introduce the Fall season and will be used about the beginning of September. We will explore the environment and see changes what happens during this season. My students' love of literature will grow and hopefully inspire them to become lifelong readers.
