Research has shown that flexible seating increases student engagement and focus. The ability to move aids students that have sensory and learning disabilities or ADHD and helps them maintain their focus on their work.
Giving students a choice of where to work and the option to choose a location and space that works for them best promotes student choice and problem solving and has shown to increase student productivity and learning retention.
This past year, a parent purchased a wobble stool for their child who had trouble maintaining focus during lessons. It was amazing to see how just being able to move/wobble in a seat helped this student maintain his focus during lessons and work. It also kept the student from fidgeting and distracting other students.
I plan to incorporate the wobble stools, bouncy bands, bean bag chairs, and stability balls into my classroom as choice seating to go along some standard desk seating. The wobble stools, stability balls, and bouncy bands will help students with ADHD and sensory needs focus better by allowing movement while working. The bean bag chairs will give students comfortable places to work in the room.
