I work at a Title 1 school and most of my students come from low income families. My students are eager to learn and enjoy reading. They crave knowledge and love being read to as well as making connections and reading with others. Many of my students do not have books at home or someone to read with them, or to them. School is the only place that some of my students are exposed to good quality reading. My students love listening to me as I read chapter books to the class, but for them to develop as a life long readers they need to be able to learn techniques and strategies to fully understand what they are reading. If we had a class set of chapter books, students would not only be able to listen as I model for them but they could start to participate in more activities to better help them understand complex text. Thus, it would help to develop life long readers.
