My students are first graders who are coming from primarily low-income homes. Many of the children's basic needs for nutrition, clothing, and shelter are not met; so school is a place where essential needs are met. Families who are able to provide for their children's needs are too busy working to participate in most school functions. Overall, my students families understand the critical role of education in lifting their children out of poverty, and communicate this to their young students. I am fortunate to teach with a passionate, compassionate, and tireless group of educators. As a first-year public school teacher last year, I was met with kindness and support any time I needed help. Our school organizes many school-wide events to boost student's love for learning and family involvement. As a new teacher I was able to bond with the whole community through events such as; One School/One Book, Math Night, and the school fair.
