My second grade students are joyful and eager to learn. They come into the school year with positive attitude for learning. As the year continues, this attitude seems to fade. Many of the students in my class do not get the educational support beyond the school walls. Many of the students in my class are mostly from low- middle socioeconomic families. With this, their parents often work multiple jobs and are not home to spend time with their children on homework or reading. The county I teach in is overall an economically low area. Twenty-eight percent of the county population live below the poverty line. My school is categorized as a Title 1 school because of the factors in our county. The majority of the students that attend the school I teach at are African American.
