My school is a Title I school. 44.8% of students are an ethnic minority. Many of these minority students come from Hispanic homes where Spanish is their primary language. 33.3% of students are classified as English Language Learners. An even larger percentage of students speak only Spanish at home. Because Spanish is the primary language spoken in the home, many students don't have parents that can help them with their reading at home. Consequently, many students are behind reading benchmark levels for their age. Additionally, 83.1% of the school student population comes from economically disadvantaged homes. Most parents work full-time, and some even work 2 jobs to support their families. Many students don't have books available to them at home to help them practice and progress in their reading skills. Additionally, many parents are out working and aren't able to be at home to help their child read or help them with homework. These books will help students reach reading goals.
